Picking Blueberries – Starkey Blueberry Farm

Blueberry Picking At Starkey Blueberry Farm. You should go. Last weekend, a group of our Sailwinds Realty associates along with our Brokers went to Starkey Blueberry Farm to pick blueberries last year. The farm is  at 3100 Starkey Blvd., New Port Richey, FL. 34655. Take a look at their Facebook page here. The 2019 blueberry picking should start towards the end of March.

It was a cloudy day but it didn’t rain. And it was warm but not hot. So we dressed appropriately, put on our hats and sunscreen and ventured forth. I was wondering if we needed to bring buckets or gloves or whatever. The last time I went picking, I was a child and Mom handled all that.

When we arrived, we were greeted and given a bucket to fill; they told us how much it held and what the price would be ($5/pound). Or we could buy pre-picked ones for $6/pound. Choosing to pick our own, we were also told what to look for in color and to eat any to try them out so we would know if they were sweet or tart or whatever.

Picking Blueberries At Starkey Blueberry FarmWe met up with our friends, Julia and William Labbancz who are our Brokers at Sailwinds Realty, and walked into the fields where we found several other friends. Row upon row of blueberry bushes extended for seemingly miles in all directions. So, we did what any inexperienced pickers would do; we started taste testing, pulling blueberries off different rows of bushes until we found ones that we really liked the taste of. Going With Friends Or Family Is Best

Going with a group of friends and/or family makes the whole experience more fun. We laughed at each others efforts to fill our buckets first or eat the most berries. After we had our buckets weighed and paid for our stash, we decided that it was time for lunch (after all those berries!). Our bucket weighed almost 5 lbs. (We really like blueberries and freezing them is so easy). Now I can make blueberry muffins, blueberry pie, blueberry wine, and everything blueberry; personally, I like them on my cereal in the mornings.

So, if you’re looking for a fun thing to do with the kids, try picking blueberries. There’s also a play area for the kids. And, they sell other fresh, farm produce as well. Have a fun-filled day!

BTW, the blackberry picking season is mid-late May. I can’t wait.

Have you been to Spinner’s Restaurant yet? It revolves and has spectacular beach and Gulf views.
