Easter Hibiscus in New Port Richey FL

Easter Hibiscus in New Port Richey FL. My hibiscus plant out in our front yard bloomed with 5 beautiful blossoms today. Hibiscus are stunning plants and I’ve always loved the red ones best.

Why do I plant Hibiscus instead of Lilies? Lilies are poisonous to cats and small animals. I wrote a post about that last year, you can read it here

This wasn’t our only Easter surprise today.  We also had a small alligator, about 2.5-3 ft. sitting next to our pond. He was really very cute but I didn’t get a picture because the grass hid most of him.  I figured that as soon as I headed towards him for a Kodak moment, he would slide into the pond so I left him alone to enjoy his day.

Hibiscus make the most wonderful decorative plants for your front door area. They bloom almost constantly although the flowers only last for one day. And they come in a huge variety of colors and sizes. There are some with flowers as big as dinner plates. Hibiscus are native to tropical and subtropical regions. They are also known as Rose Mallow.

The flowers make beautiful table decorations floating in water in a pretty bowl. (Be sure to look for any ants or spiders and rinse them out gently so as not to hurt the flower). And, you can make wonderful Hibiscus tea:

2 cups of dried Hibiscus flowers, 3/4 cup of sugar, 8 cups of water divided. Bring to, a boil, reduce heat and let simmer(covered) for 15 minutes, strain out the flowers, add the remaining 4 cups of water, and chill. Recipe from Cupcake Project on Pinterest.

We’ve had our usual band of birds including herons, small blue herons, ducks, and a Great Blue Heron (gorgeous). It’s sort of cloudy out but no rain yet.
