Hurricane-Tropical Storm Names-Atlantic 2018

According to the World Meteorological Organization: Since 1953, Atlantic tropical storms are named from lists originated by the National Hurricane Center. They are now maintained and updated by an international committee of the WMO.

Every six years, a whole set of new names makes its way from the  World Meteorological Organization. Names of very bad storms are never used again. No-one wants a storm named Katrina again.

Originally only women’s names were used, (I’m not even going to go into the reasoning there; it was a long time ago).  In 1979, men and women names alternated.  Six lists of names are used in rotation. When a name is removed,  (think Katrina), the Committee selects a new name at its annual  meeting.  If they run out of alphabetical names during the year, they  use Greek letters (alpha, beta, etc.).

You can use the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale to determine wind speeds .

Category Average Wind (mph) Representative Hurricanes
Category One      74 – 95 Danny; 1997
Category Two      96 – 110 Bonnie & Georges; 1998
Category Three      111 – 129 Rita; 2005
Category Four      130 – 156 Charley; 2004
Category Five      157 + Andrew; 1992
