Lowry Park Zoo – Creatures Of The Night

Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo – Creatures Of The Night promises to be even scarier than last year. This is a fun and non-frightening celebration of Halloween. On Fridays and Saturdays from October 4-26, the Zoo stays open late and animals lurk in the night until 10 p.m. with a haunting array of eerie and immersive Halloween adventures for the whole family. Don’t worry, Mom and Dad – there’s no horror or gore, just an impressive lineup of endless scares and startles for one and all!

Lowry Park Zoo - Creatures Of The NightLowry Park Zoo – Creatures Of The Night

You will love this and so will your kids. You can visit scare zones, or encounter animals, or maybe dance the night away at a ghoulish party.

Asia, Africa, and Primate worlds are now illuminated for night viewing. You’ll see animals lurking till 10 pm, or shudder at the creepy, crawlies at the eerie canal.

Two all-new scare zones:

1. Twisted Tale Trail: The tale is familiar and known to all; three little pigs, a wolf and a girl in a hood frolicking in the woods. What happens when two tales intertwine and something strange begins to unfold? Guests will be immersed in a fight between good and evil as the tale takes an unexpected twist and guests will wonder just who is Little Red?

2. Rising Waters: A forgotten Florida coastal town was swallowed whole by a mysterious, relentless storm. Guests will experience an array of eerie encounters as the rising and falling waters reveal more about the long-lost inhabitants, good and bad, that are exposed as the flooding recedes

Returning favorites include: Medusa’s Stone Cold Cave, Enchanted Fairy Meadow, Pigpimples School of Mystery and Mayhem, Pumpkin Palooza and more!

Information, Photo & Video courtesy of Lowry Park Zoo.

Dining at the Zoo includes seasonal items like pumpkin parfaits. Or older adventurers can visit the beer garden.

I’m sure you know where Lowry Park Zoo is but just in case, here’s a map. Lowry Park Zoo

Lowry Park Zoo – Creatures Of The Night has some rules.

How Did We Get Sponge Docks?

First, in 1887 the railroad service to New York began and created a boom for Tarpon Springs. The gorgeous Victorian Mansions you see around the Bayous were built by wealthy people who came to visit and fell in love with the area. In due time, they helped establish churches, schools, businesses, and hotels (so that more wealthy tourists could visit and fall in love).

Secondly, Lots of Sponges grew in the waters around Tarpon Springs; a huge sponge industry developed when the Greek divers came. At the same time, the Greek families opened shops and restaurants, pastry shops and markets.

Where is John Chesnut Park? 2200 East Lake Road, Palm Harbor, FL. (It’s where our car club usually holds its annual picnics on Lake Tarpon). The views are spectacular. This post updated 3/2018.

A DJ and entertainment, a bounce house, YMCA Healthy Kids Day Activities, and lots more will be part of the fun. Food and beverages will be available to purchase. Kids will enjoy the many fun things to do and so will you.

John Chesnut Sr. Park

John Chesnut Sr. Park (aka Brooker Creek) is really one of the prettiest parks in the area. If you head over to the boat ramp area, there’s a tower you can climb and look over a huge part of Lake Tarpon. Bring your cameras. And parking is free at Pinellas County Parks.

The pictures above are taken from a wooden walkway that takes you along the edge of the lake and there are always interesting things to see. We’ve walked there  with Herons or Egrets standing on the walkway handrails just watching us stroll by. Gators swim by in the water.

Finally, I hope to see you there. I’ll be wearing the hat.  🙂

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross on Epiphany Sunday, January 6, 2019 to celebrate Epiphany.  The following is a history given by Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 36 N Pinellas Ave Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. 727-937-3540. You can access the website here.

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross

History of Epiphany

The Orthodox Christian celebrates Epiphany on January 6th of each year, in remembrance of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River 2000 years ago. Following tradition, the Greek community established January 6th of each year be celebrated with the sanctification of the waters; and immersion of the cross in the Spring bayou on “Cross Day” or “Epiphany”.

The first observance of Epiphany in Tarpon Springs was in 1903 in an Episcopal church attended by few people. In the next few years, as the news spread throughout the US and Canada, devoted Greeks and Americans made the pilgrimage from the nation and Canada to take part in the celebration of Epiphany and its three-day festivities.

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross

A golden cross is thrown into the water, at the same moment, the young men  dive into the waters. They swim, wrestle, and churn the waters in search of the cross. The throwing of the cross symbolizes casting of the bread of truth upon the troubled world.

Furthermore, the diver who retrieves the cross kneels before the Archbishop  while handing him the golden cross. At this time, the Archbishop blesses the young man and congratulates him.

Finally, whoever retrieves the cross, it is said that he will have good fortune and divine beneficence. Upon return to the church, the divers stand at the altar, while the retriever receives special blessings.

The procession to Spring Bayou for the Dive starts at 12:15pm. (noon).

This information courtesy of Toni Weidman. If you have further questions, direct them to Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church at the phone number/website above.
