Tarpon Springs Fine Arts Festival – 2017

Tarpon Springs Fine Arts Festival – 2017. I love this time of year, all the really good things happen now like the Tarpon Springs Fine Arts Festival on Spring Bayou on April 8 & 9 (yes, this weekend).

This is the best Fine Arts Show and always has tons of people. It’s along the water at Spring Bayou and you will love the trees, the view and the art.

Tarpon Springs Fine Arts Festival – 2017

According to the Tarpon Springs Chamber “This is one of the premier Fine Arts Festivals in the Southeast. The 43rd Annual Tarpon Springs Fine Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, April 8th 9am-5pm and Sunday, April 9th 10am-5pm. More than 200 juried, artists under the trees and along the bayou. There will be live entertainment both days of the event. Food & drinks will be available for purchase.”

We go every year and thoroughly enjoy it. The art exhibited is always so amazing and so beautiful. And it’s such a gorgeous spot to spend some time.

“The featured artist is a local artist that is well-known and respected in the community. J David Wright who uses his photography to capture the people of the community and our beautiful natural surroundings. He spends many hours donating his time to several charitable organizations in N Pinellas and W Pasco.” (We’ve known Dave for years, so we are looking forward to seeing his work).

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross 2017

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross 2017 on January 6, 2017 to celebrate Epiphany.  The following is a history given by Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 36 N Pinellas Ave Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. 727-937-3540. You can access the website here.

[H]istory of Epiphany

The Orthodox Christian celebrates Epiphany on January 6th of each year, in remembrance of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River 2000 ago. Following tradition, the Greek community established January 6th of each year be celebrated with the sanctification of the waters; and immersion of the cross in the Spring bayou on “Cross Day” or “Epiphany”.

The first observance of Epiphany in Tarpon Springs was in 1903 in an Episcopal church attended by few people. In the next few years, as the news spread throughout the US and Canada, devoted Greeks and Americans made the pilgrimage from the nation and Canada to take part in the celebration of Epiphany and its three-day festivities.

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross

A golden cross is thrown into the water, at the same moment, the young men  dive into the waters. They swim, wrestle, and churn the waters in search of the cross. The throwing of the cross symbolizes casting of the bread of truth upon the troubled world.

Furthermore, the diver who retrieves the cross kneels before the Archbishop  while handing him the golden cross. At this time, the Archbishop blesses the young man and congratulates him.

Finally, whoever retrieves the cross, it is said that he will have good fortune and divine beneficence. Upon return to the church, the divers stand at the altar, while the retriever receives special blessings.

The procession to Spring Bayou for the Dive starts at 12:15pm. (noon).

Coastal Clean Up Day

Coastal Clean Up Day

Coastal Clean Up Day has been happening since 1985 when a group of volunteers met at beaches and coastal waterways to take part in Coastal Clean-up Day by the Ocean Conservancy. Beach clean-up is necessary to our health, our wildlife, and the economy.

Coastal Clean Up DaySunset Beach in Tarpon Springs by Toni Weidman

Florida is no slouch in the clean up efforts: in 2014, 23,000 volunteers picked up 285,000 lbs. of trash from beaches and waterways in the state. If you wish to participate in the clean-up; click here to visit the Ocean Conservancy website. Click on the star in the location you wish to volunteer. Each group will have its own meet-up times and information. Most state parks waive entrance fees for clean-up volunteers.

If you need one of those grabber things (you know, one of those things people in stylish stripes use on roadways clean up) you can purchase one. That way you don’t have to actually touch the trash.

If you want to know what has been picked up in a your location in the past,  click here. The resulting item-by-item, location-by-location Ocean Trash Index compiled by the Ocean Conservancy each year provides the only global look at the marine debris littering coasts and waterways around the world. Some of the items picked up include automobiles and appliances.

What you will need when helping on Saturday:

Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
Lots of water
extra gloves
insect repellent
hand sanitizer

We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world here, help keep Florida beaches beautiful for us and for the generations to come.

If you’re thinking of moving to Florida (home of clean beaches – thanks to our volunteers), click here to search homes.

Pretty Window In Tarpon Springs, FL

Pretty Window in Tarpon Springs, FL.  We strolled the main avenue in Tarpon Springs last week. It’s such a lovely walk especially when the weather is gorgeous and we indulged ourselves with viewing the Halloween window displays. I noticed this window security guard at one of the offices.

Usually window guards are so utilitarian looking, and this one is so pretty. This one can be found along Tarpon Avenue in the downtown area of Tarpon Springs, FL.

Pretty Window In Tarpon Springs, FLDowntown is so cute with lots of antique stores, clothing, and other enticing goodies like food–great restaurants (Greek and otherwise). There are always festivals going on during weekends-lots of fun. It’s where we hold our Autos for Autism car show every year.

If you’re thinking of moving to Tarpon Springs, FL or the surrounding area, give us a call. We’ve been selling the area for 23 years and we know the neighborhood.

Here’s one of the Halloween displays that made us chuckle. Imagine him trying to gain weight by eating all that candy :0)

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique even though it is not the only drawbridge in Pinellas County but Beckett Bridge was originally constructed in 1924 and re-constructed as it is today in 1956.
[updated 04/17/17]

It is a concrete, low-level drawbridge. And, it features a single-leaf span rather than the double-leaf spans found in all the other Pinellas County drawbridges that’s what makes it unique.

It is also unique in that it does not have a full-time bridge tender on duty. Tall boats have to provide notice to Pinellas County 2 hours prior to requesting a bridge opening! It  stretches over Whitcomb and Minetta Bayous.

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique

The bridge is named after a Pinellas County Commissioner, E. H. Beckett. Mr. Beckett was chairman of the Board of County Commissioners in 1924.

If you are taking a trip to the Sponge Docks; plan on a drive over the picturesque Becket Bridge.

Take Alt. 19 into Tarpon Springs; go west on West Orange which becomes North Spring Blvd; continue until you see the Draw Bridge Ahead signs. It is located next to the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club. You have to see the Sponge Docks, Beckett Bridge and downtown Tarpon Springs.

I’m sure you have been to the charming downtown area of Tarpon Springs with it’s antique stores, interesting gift shops and boutiques, and wonderful restaurants like Currents and Mike’s Blue Crab (this is Mike’s Instagram page). If you haven’t, consider a day trip there and include the Sponge Docks with it’s colorful history. It’s one of our favorite places and we enjoy going to the many Festivals and especially the Fine Arts Festival in April each year.
