Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross on Epiphany Sunday, January 6, 2019 to celebrate Epiphany.  The following is a history given by Saint Nicholas Greek Orthodox Cathedral at 36 N Pinellas Ave Tarpon Springs, FL 34689. 727-937-3540. You can access the website here.

History of Epiphany

The Orthodox Christian celebrates Epiphany on January 6th of each year, in remembrance of the baptism of Jesus Christ in the Jordan River 2000 years ago. Following tradition, the Greek community established January 6th of each year be celebrated with the sanctification of the waters; and immersion of the cross in the Spring bayou on “Cross Day” or “Epiphany”.

The first observance of Epiphany in Tarpon Springs was in 1903 in an Episcopal church attended by few people. In the next few years, as the news spread throughout the US and Canada, devoted Greeks and Americans made the pilgrimage from the nation and Canada to take part in the celebration of Epiphany and its three-day festivities.

Tarpon Springs Diving For The Cross

A golden cross is thrown into the water, at the same moment, the young men  dive into the waters. They swim, wrestle, and churn the waters in search of the cross. The throwing of the cross symbolizes casting of the bread of truth upon the troubled world.

Furthermore, the diver who retrieves the cross kneels before the Archbishop  while handing him the golden cross. At this time, the Archbishop blesses the young man and congratulates him.

Finally, whoever retrieves the cross, it is said that he will have good fortune and divine beneficence. Upon return to the church, the divers stand at the altar, while the retriever receives special blessings.

The procession to Spring Bayou for the Dive starts at 12:15pm. (noon).

Easter Lilies- Poisonous To Your Cat

Easter Lilies- Poisonous To Your Cat

I will never buy an Easter Lily again even though I love them and everyone in my family loves them.  But according to the ASPCA and FDA, Easter Lilies can cause the following symptoms: vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, kidney failure and death is a possible too.
Easter Lilies- Poisonous To Your Cat

Easter Lilies- Poisonous To Your Cat

The FDA says the entire plant is poisonous including the pollen. FDA warns that if you suspect your cat has ingested any of the lily (not just Easter Lilies), call your vet immediately. Even the pollen if they brush against it can be hazardous. And it could be just a few grains of pollen licked off their fur.

Dogs may have gastrointestinal issues but nothing life threatening.

If Easter Lilies-Poisonous to Your Cat. Why have it in your home? The list includes Tiger, Asiatic, Day and Japanese Show Lilies. Lily of the Valley is toxic too.

Sunset Beach – Tarpon Springs, FL

Sunset Beach – Tarpon Springs, FL

During the winter, I took this picture of Sunset Beach in Tarpon Springs, FL. A happy beach walker was walking through but I didn’t see him till I uploaded my pictures. We enjoy walking the beaches in the winter. They have a different quality then and it’s much quieter and very peaceful.

Sunset Beach – Tarpon Springs, FL

Sunset Beach - Tarpon Springs, FL

As far as I’m concerned, this is one of the prettiest beaches in our area and this was a cold and windy but bright sunny day. Even a cold day at the beach is a good day! The submerged property  was donated to the City of Tarpon Springs by Nick and Irene Nicholas in 1926. The City then created Sunset Beach.

If you know anything about Tarpon Springs, FL., it is probably the Sponge Docks and the quirky shopping area there. There are so many delicious Greek and seafood restaurants, you can’t possibly leave hungry. And the shopping is fun and fantastical. It’s always busy and lots of tourists hit the Sponge Docks as part of their must-see list.

Also a busy area in the downtown area of Tarpon Springs. Lots of antique shops, and a great mixture of place to eat.

Lots of festivals and fairs happen in both the Sponge Docks and the downtown Tarpon Springs:there’s the Fine Arts Festival in April, HippieFest, and Snow Place Like Tarpon Springs, Oktoberfest,. It’s a great place to spend a Saturday or Sunday.

In contrast, Sunset Beach is a special spot and is always peaceful, located just south of Howard Park.  You can drop in for concerts on Thursday evenings during the summer. Nick and Irene might join you.

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique

Beckett Bridge – Tarpon Springs Is Unique even though it is not the only drawbridge in Pinellas County but Beckett Bridge was originally constructed in 1924 and re-constructed as it is today in 1956.

It is a concrete, low-level drawbridge. And, it features a single-leaf span and not the double-leaf spans found in all the other Pinellas County drawbridges that’s what makes it unique.

It is also unique in that it does not have a full-time bridge tender on duty. Tall boats have to give notice to Pinellas County 2 hours prior to requesting a bridge opening! It  stretches over Whitcomb and Minetta Bayous.

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique

Beckett Bridge-Tarpon Springs Is Unique

The bridge is named after a Pinellas County Commissioner, E. H. Beckett. Mr. Beckett was chairman of the Board of County Commissioners in 1924.

If you are taking a trip to the Sponge Docks; plan on a drive over the picturesque Becket Bridge.

Take Alt. 19 into Tarpon Springs; go west on West Orange which becomes North Spring Blvd; continue until you see the Draw Bridge Ahead signs. It is located next to the Tarpon Springs Yacht Club. You have to see the Sponge Docks, Beckett Bridge and downtown Tarpon Springs.

I’m sure you have been to the charming downtown area of Tarpon Springs with its antique stores, interesting gift shops and boutiques, and wonderful restaurants like Currents and Mike’s Blue Crab (this is Mike’s Instagram page). If you haven’t, consider a day trip there and include the Sponge Docks with its colorful history. It’s one of our favorite places and we enjoy going to the many Festivals and especially the Fine Arts Festival in April each year.

Equally important, Tarpon Springs is a historic city with a large Greek culture; the Sponge Docks, established in the 1880’s, are known all over the world and many tourists travel here to see it.   the homes are a mix of and Victorian and Florida architecture.

Furthermore, incorporated in 1887, it is the oldest city in Pinellas County, Florida. It is also home to the Tarpon Springs Fine Art Festival which you can see on a previous blog along with one of the historic homes.

The Tarpon Springs Heritage Museum sits in the area surrounding Craig Park. We love Tarpon Springs and drive there often for events, a visit to the Sponge Docks and especially for our car club’s Autos For Autism event in March. (No longer allowed in Tarpon Springs, unfortunately.)

Coastal Clean Up Day

Coastal Clean Up Day

Coastal Clean Up Day has been happening since 1985 when a group of volunteers met at beaches and coastal waterways to take part in Coastal Clean-up Day by the Ocean Conservancy. Beach clean-up is necessary to our health, our wildlife, and the economy.

Coastal Clean Up DaySunset Beach in Tarpon Springs by Toni Weidman

Florida is no slouch in the clean up efforts: in 2014, 23,000 volunteers picked up 285,000 lbs. of trash from beaches and waterways in the state. If you wish to participate in the clean-up; click here to visit the Ocean Conservancy website. Click on the star in the location you wish to volunteer. Each group will have its own meet-up times and information. Most state parks waive entrance fees for clean-up volunteers.

If you need one of those grabber things (you know, one of those things people in stylish stripes use on roadways clean up) you can purchase one. That way you don’t have to actually touch the trash.

If you want to know what has been picked up in a your location in the past,  click here. The resulting item-by-item, location-by-location Ocean Trash Index compiled by the Ocean Conservancy each year provides the only global look at the marine debris littering coasts and waterways around the world. Some of the items picked up include automobiles and appliances.

What you will need when helping on Saturday:

Sunscreen, hat and sunglasses
Lots of water
extra gloves
insect repellent
hand sanitizer

We have some of the most beautiful beaches in the world here, help keep Florida beaches beautiful for us and for the generations to come.
